Abdülhamid II Mosque

This Ottoman-era mosque in the heart of the city is named after Sultan Abdülhamid II and represents the historical Ottoman influence on the region during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The building is architecturally distinct from the local mosques, with a more formal Ottoman design. It's a lesser-visited sight but an interesting counterpoint to the French colonial buildings a few blocks away — a reminder that the city's layered history involves more than two powers.
