Getting There

From Djibouti City, there are two options: the road around the gulf (about 120 km via the N1 highway, taking 2–3 hours depending on condition), or the boat crossing from L'Escale dock in Djibouti City, which takes around an hour and a half across the gulf. The boat is the more atmospheric option and runs several times a week — schedules are informal and worth confirming locally.

Shared taxis run between Djibouti City and Tadjoura on the road route and are the most economical option. The road crosses some stark volcanic landscape past Lake Assal before dropping to the coast.

Tadjoura Airport has a small airstrip but scheduled commercial flights are rare. Charter arrangements can be made through operators in Djibouti City for those with time constraints.
