Cycling the West Bank

Hire a bicycle on the West Bank and explore the agricultural fringe between temples at your own pace

The West Bank of Luxor is flat near the Nile and hilly beyond the cultivation line, and the lower agricultural zone is well suited to exploring by bicycle. Hire shops are clustered near the West Bank ferry landing, and a half-day hire costs very little. The route between the main sites — the Colossi of Memnon, Medinet Habu, the Valley of the Queens, and the turn-off for the Valley of the Kings — can be cycled comfortably in a morning if you are not stopping at every site.

Cycling gives you access to the spaces between attractions: the small Coptic churches, the fields where farmers are still ploughing with donkeys, the backstreets of Qurna village, and the mud-brick houses that edge the cultivation. The experience of arriving at a temple by bicycle, rather than in a minibus with ten other tourists, changes the character of the visit. Start early — by 10am in summer the heat makes cycling uncomfortable. Take water, a hat, and a sense of direction; the West Bank roads are simple enough that getting lost is a minor inconvenience rather than a disaster.
