Dakrur Mountain

A small mountain south of town where pilgrims bury themselves in hot sand.

A low, distinctive peak rising south of the oasis. In October, hundreds of Egyptians come to be buried up to their necks in Dakrur's hot sand — a traditional therapy for rheumatism. Specialised camps near the base run the treatment for visitors who book in advance.

Outside the festival season the mountain is quiet, and the climb to the top — about an hour — is rewarded with a sweeping view over the palm groves and the salt lakes to the north. Combine with sunset at nearby Bir Ramez if you have a vehicle.
