Fatnas Island

A palm-covered island on the salt lake, famous for its sunsets.

Fatnas — sometimes spelled Fantasy Island — is a small palm-covered outcrop on Birket Siwa, the largest of the oasis salt lakes. A causeway connects it to the western edge of town. There's a freshwater spring for swimming and a simple cafe with cushions under the palms.

People come here at sunset. The sun drops behind the dunes on the far shore, the salt flats turn pink, and pelicans glide low across the water. It's about twenty minutes by bike from town centre and an unmissable evening if the weather is clear.
