Rio Muni

Mainland Equatorial Guinea region where Bata beaches lead inland to rainforest and the Gabon border.

Rio Muni is the mainland portion of Equatorial Guinea, and one of the least-visited corners of Africa. Getting here takes a bit of an explorer's spirit — infrastructure is sparse, roads are rough, and tourist facilities are almost nonexistent. But that is precisely the appeal for those who do make the trip.

Bata, the mainland capital, is the starting point. Just south of town are some excellent beaches. Regular flights connect Bata to Malabo on Bioko Island, along with a weekly ferry.

Travel overland in Rio Muni is an adventure in itself. There is no bridge between Cocobeach in Gabon and Acalayong in the south, so driving to Libreville means a long detour via Evinayong. The road north to Cameroon runs through Ebebiyín in the far northeast. In both directions, expect dense jungle pressing in on both sides and roads that barely qualify as such.
