Acalayong

Remote southern mainland Equatorial Guinea town on a broad estuary near the Gabonese border.

Acalayong is the southernmost town in mainland Equatorial Guinea and sees very few tourists. It consists of some fifty buildings huddled on the shore of a broad estuary near the Gabonese border.

Getting here from Bata or Mbini is an adventure in itself. The road takes about eight hours from Bata and is in deplorable condition, practically swallowed by dense jungle that closes in on both sides. There is little to see along the way except the forest.

From Acalayong, pirogues (dugout canoes) can take you across the estuary into Gabon — some even have outboard motors. This is one of the more obscure border crossings in Central Africa.

Things to Do

There is not much to do in Acalayong beyond passing through. The main reason to be here is the estuary crossing into Gabon, which is the most interesting thing about the town.
