Awash River Gorge

The Awash River rises in the highlands west of Addis Ababa and cuts southeast through the Rift Valley before eventually losing itself in the saline lakes of the Afar lowlands. Near Adama, it is still a substantial river running through open country, and the section where it begins to descend more steeply into the Rift offers some of the most accessible dramatic scenery in this part of Ethiopia. The gorge is not as deep or as sheer as the better-known canyon at Awash National Park downstream, but it has the advantage of being reachable on a day trip without a long drive.

The area around the gorge is good for birdwatching — raptors ride the thermals above the escarpment, and the riverine bush along the banks holds weavers, bee-eaters, and kingfishers. There is no formal park infrastructure here, so you are on your own with transport and access; the best approach is to hire a vehicle in Adama and ask your driver or a local guide to show you the best vantage points. Morning is the right time, both for the light and the wildlife. If you are continuing to Awash National Park, the gorge gives you a useful preview of the landscapes to come.
