Adama's appeal is mostly in its surroundings. The Rift Valley setting delivers big landscapes, and the Awash River — beginning its long journey toward the Afar desert — cuts through dramatic country just east of town. The real draw for most visitors is Sodere, a geothermal resort 25 km southeast that has been pulling weekend escapees from Addis Ababa for decades.
