Sodere Hot Springs

Twenty-five kilometres southeast of Adama, Sodere has been the weekend escape of choice for Addis Ababa residents since it was developed in the 1960s. The resort is built around natural hot spring pools fed by geothermal waters from deep in the Rift, and the setting is startlingly lush — the Awash River runs nearby and the riverine vegetation along its banks is dense and green compared to the dry scrub surrounding it. The water in the pools is warm enough to be genuinely soothing but not scalding, and there are both outdoor pools and smaller pools under shade structures. On a Friday afternoon the place fills rapidly with families and groups from the capital.

Beyond the pools, the grounds are home to a large troop of olive baboons that have long since worked out that visitors mean food. They are entertaining but persistent — keep your bag closed. Vervet monkeys and various birds also frequent the vegetation along the river. The pools themselves are the main event, but it is worth walking down to the Awash bank in the early morning when the light is good and the animals are active. The resort has basic facilities including changing rooms and a restaurant; it gets crowded on weekends and public holidays, so a weekday visit is considerably more peaceful.
