Getting There

Debre Damo is located in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia, about 100 kilometres north of Axum and 60 kilometres west of Adigrat, near the town of Bizet. The site sits close to the Eritrean border.

Most visitors arrive as part of a circuit through the Tigray churches, combining Debre Damo with the rock-hewn churches of the Gheralta escarpment and the ancient ruins of Axum. The standard approach is to hire a vehicle and guide from Axum or Adwa — public transport exists but requires changes and leaves you with a walk at the end. From the main road, a rough track leads to the base of the amba; the climb itself takes about 20 minutes with reasonable fitness.

Access conditions in the Tigray region depend on the security situation, which has been variable in recent years. Check current advisories before visiting.
