Gondar's UNESCO World Heritage sites dominate any itinerary, and rightly so. The Royal Enclosure alone could absorb a full morning; add Debre Berhan Selassie church and the Fasilidas Baths and you have a rich day's sightseeing without leaving the city. The enclosure is best in early morning before tour groups arrive.
Beyond the headline sites, the city rewards slow walking. The streets around the central Piazza retain Italian colonial-era facades alongside older Gondarene buildings. The market near the bus station is one of the largest in the Amhara region and worth a wander even if you are not buying anything.
