Harar Brewery

The Harar Brewery, on the southern outskirts of the walled city, produces Harar Beer — one of Ethiopia's two most popular beers (the other being St. George's from Addis Ababa). The brewery has been here since the 1980s and its industrial profile is a somewhat incongruous sight in a city defined by its Islamic heritage.

Tours of the brewery are not routinely offered to individual travelers, but the beer itself is worth seeking out in local bars and restaurants in the new city. It has a distinctly different character from most East African lagers — slightly darker and more malt-forward — and pairs well with the spiced meat dishes that Harar is known for.

A story
The brewery was established in 1985 and is one of the oldest commercial breweries in Ethiopia. Harar Beer — malty, slightly sweet, and popular throughout the country — is produced here. The brewery's existence in one of Islam's holy cities creates an interesting cultural tension that most Harar residents navigate with pragmatic good humor.
