Lalibela has a small but developing restaurant scene driven by the tourist trade. The baseline of Ethiopian cuisine — injera with tibs, doro wat, and vegetable stews — is available everywhere and is generally excellent. The local honey wine (tej) and the potent grain spirit (araki) are worth trying once. A handful of restaurants have made an effort to create a memorable experience rather than just feed tourists on the way to the churches.
