Fort Kumasi

Colonial-era fort turned military museum

The fort built by the British after their 1896 conquest of Kumasi now houses a military museum. The exhibits cover the Anglo-Ashanti wars, colonial administration, and Ghana's independence. It is a good counterpoint to the Manhyia Palace — both sides of the same history, told from different vantage points.

A story
The original British fort was burned to the ground by Ashanti forces during the wars of resistance. The current structure was built after the British conquest of 1896 and served as a base for colonial control of the region. It is now a military museum with a small but well-presented collection on Ghana's colonial and independence-era history.
