Eating Out

Kumasi eats well. The Ashanti version of fufu — pounded cassava and plantain served with a rich groundnut or palmnut soup — is the regional signature, and the best is rarely found in tourist places but in the modest "chop bars" along every residential street. For a sit-down meal, the area around the Cultural Centre and Adum has a cluster of mid-range restaurants serving both Ghanaian and Chinese, Indian, or Lebanese food.

Street food is excellent. Look for women grilling tilapia and plantain along Prempeh II Street in the evenings, or buy a bag of kelewele — fried spiced plantain — from a roadside seller for a few cedis.
