Kumasi Zoo

Small but charmingly central zoo near the cultural centre

Founded in the 1950s and right in the middle of town, the zoo holds an assortment of West African wildlife — lions, monkeys, crocodiles, hyenas — in conditions that are obviously dated. It is not a place for animal welfare purists, but for travellers passing through Kumasi who want a shaded hour under big trees away from the bustle of Adum it is pleasant enough.

The enclosure for the chimps tends to draw the longest crowds. Pair it with the Centre for National Culture next door — they share a perimeter wall — and you have a half-day in the city centre that does not involve braving the market.
