Lake Bosumtwi

Sacred meteor crater lake with deep blue water

A crater lake about 30 km southeast of Kumasi, Bosumtwi is sacred to the Ashanti and remarkably beautiful. Surrounded by steep green hills, the deep blue water is calm and good for swimming. It makes an easy half-day trip from the city — take a shared taxi to Kuntanase and then find a motorbike or another taxi down to the lake.

A story
Lake Bosumtwi formed roughly 1.07 million years ago when a meteor struck the earth here. The Ashanti consider it sacred — the souls of the dead come here to bid farewell to the god Twi. Traditionally, fishing on the lake was done only from wooden planks, never from canoes, a rule observed to avoid offending the deity.
