The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) is the country's main teacher-training institution and dominates the inland half of the town. The campus is open and a pleasant place to walk — modern lecture buildings spread among older bungalows, with palm-shaded paths and a steady flow of students between halls.
The university bookshop on campus is one of the best places to pick up Ghanaian academic and cultural titles. There are simple chop bars and student canteens around the gates that are cheap and reliable for lunch.
