When to Go

The single best time to be in Winneba is the first weekend of May, when the Aboakyere festival turns the town into a giant traditional pageant — drumming, processions, the deer-hunt itself, and a public durbar at the chief's palace. Book a room weeks ahead and expect higher prices.

Christmas and New Year are another lively window — the Effutu's masquerade-style fancy dress competitions fill the streets between 25 December and 2 January. Outside the festivals the town is calm and easy. The dry season runs roughly from November to March, with cooler nights and clearer skies; April to October brings the main rains, with heaviest downpours in June. Avoid the harmattan haze of December and January if you want to see the coast clearly.
