Our Lady of Grace Cathedral

The seat of the Catholic Diocese of Bafatá, a modest mid-20th-century brick cathedral with a single bell tower at the front. The Portuguese colonial church-building tradition in Guinea-Bissau produced nothing on the scale of Goa or Macau — the missions here were always thin — and the cathedral is correspondingly plain, more a parish church than a great basilica. The interior holds a painted wooden ceiling and a few simple altarpieces.

Mass is held on Sundays and the building is usually open during the day. It is worth ten minutes as part of a walk through the colonial centre.
