Bafatá Market

The main market of Bafatá, on the central square. Most active in the morning, when traders come in from the surrounding Fula and Mandinka villages with rice, peanuts, cashews, palm oil, fresh fish from the Geba River, and dried fish from the coast. Cloth, plastic kitchenware, mobile-phone accessories, and the standard imported African market goods make up the rest of the stalls.

The market is the easiest place in town to get a sense of everyday life in interior Guinea-Bissau. Photograph with restraint and ask first. The covered section is the most atmospheric — long aisles of low concrete stalls under a tin roof.
