The Fouta Djallon highlands are one of West Africa's best destinations for trekking, and Dalaba is the most practical base for multi-day routes through the plateau. The terrain is varied: open grasslands on the high plateau, granite outcrops, forested river gorges, and the dramatic escarpment edges where the plateau drops in cliffs and waterfalls to the plains below. Fulani villages are scattered throughout, and local families will often offer hospitality to trekkers passing through.
Day hikes can be arranged easily from Dalaba — the Centre d'Accueil can connect you with local guides who know the routes. Multi-day circuits of three to five days take you to the most remote waterfalls and highest plateaus. The trails are unmarked and the landscape can be confusing without a guide; security has improved significantly in recent years but asking locally about current conditions is always wise. The best trekking season is October to February, after the rains have ended and the vegetation is still green.
