Festivals

Guinea has a rich tradition of music and storytelling, and its festivals reflect this. Most are concentrated in Conakry, though village celebrations happen year-round across the country.

Festival International Kora et Cordes de Conakry is the country's biggest music event, held in early December. Musicians from across West Africa gather to play kora, guitar, balafon, and everything in between. Stages are set up around the city and the atmosphere is electric. If you can time your visit for this, do.

Kiini Afrika (Festival des Arts de Conte) takes place in late April and celebrates Guinea's oral traditions. For a week, storytellers, poets, and wordsmiths fill the streets. Debates, workshops, and performances happen in venues across Conakry. It is informal and participatory -- anyone can join in.

The Macao Arts Festival is one of Conakry's most spectacular events, inspired by a Malinke legend of a hunter who captured a drumming monkey and stole its djembe. The festival combines circus, acrobatics, and traditional dance, with performers scaling a massive baobab-like structure to perform stunts and dances. It is visually unforgettable.

Outside Conakry, local festivals tied to harvests, Islamic holidays, and initiation ceremonies are celebrated in villages throughout the country. These are not organized for tourists, but if you happen upon one, the hospitality and music are extraordinary. Ramadan and Tabaski (Eid al-Adha) are widely observed and bring communities together for feasting and celebration.
