Fondation Félix Houphouët-Boigny

The foundation established in honour of Félix Houphouët-Boigny occupies a large modern complex on the edge of the city and serves as a cultural centre, research institute, and monument to the country's founding president. The building is impressive in scale if somewhat underused — spacious halls and exhibition spaces that host occasional conferences and cultural events.

For visitors, the foundation provides useful historical context about the Ivorian independence movement and Houphouët-Boigny's long presidency. The library is significant and the gardens are well-maintained. The complex is worth walking around for its architecture alone — a confident statement in concrete and glass from the optimistic years of the 1980s.

A story
Houphouët-Boigny ruled Côte d'Ivoire for 33 years, from independence in 1960 until his death in 1993. The foundation was established in his lifetime as part of his project to turn Yamoussoukro into an intellectual and cultural capital to match its political one — a vision that the city's empty conference halls suggest was never quite realised.
