Tea stalls selling milky spiced chai and fried mandazi are a fixture of Isiolo's streets, particularly in the morning hours before departures north. The chai is strong, sweet, and flavoured with spices — the fuel of a long drive through the semi-arid country ahead. Cheap enough that a full breakfast of chai and mandazi costs almost nothing. Also available at the basic hotels on the main street if you prefer to sit indoors.
