Lake Bogoria

Alkaline Rift Valley lake known for flamingos, steep shores, and geothermal activity.

The lake itself is the centrepiece: shallow, saline, and often edged by flamingos when the algae bloom suits them. Its colours shift with weather and season, from hard silver under midday sun to soft pink and blue in the evening.

This is not a swimming lake. The water is alkaline, the shore can be muddy or crusted with minerals, and geothermal vents are active in places. Treat it as a landscape to watch, photograph, and understand rather than a place to jump into.

A story
Lake Bogoria was formerly called Lake Hannington, after Bishop James Hannington, who passed through the area in 1885. The older name still survives around viewpoints and historical references.
