Kiwayu Island

Kiwayu is the northernmost island in the Lamu archipelago, about four hours by motorised dhow from Lamu town, and as close to a deserted-island experience as the East African coast offers. A handful of low-key eco-camps and a single fishing village are the only development; the eastern beach is twelve kilometres of white sand against the Indian Ocean.

It is best as an overnight trip rather than a day excursion. Arrange the dhow and accommodation through Lamu Town operators before going. Security on the route should be checked before booking — the area is close to the Somali maritime border.
