Crescent Island Game Sanctuary

A private wildlife sanctuary on Lake Naivasha where you can walk freely among giraffe and zebra

Crescent Island is a peninsula — technically an island only when lake levels are high — jutting into the eastern side of Lake Naivasha. It is a private game sanctuary where you are allowed to walk freely among the animals without a vehicle, which is a genuinely unusual experience in Kenya. Giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, waterbuck, and Thomson's gazelle wander about with remarkable indifference to visitors on foot.

Access is by boat from the various camps along Moi South Lake Road; the crossing takes about 10 minutes. Combined Lake Naivasha boat trips and Crescent Island walks are easily arranged from the shore camps. The island has been used as a film set — notably for parts of Out of Africa — and the combination of Rift Valley lake, wildlife, and acacia trees gives it a consistently photogenic quality.
