Basotho Hat Shop

The Basotho Hat is a building shaped like a hat — a low concrete cone with a conical roof — that has been a fixture of central Maseru since the 1960s and houses the country's main craft cooperative. Inside you'll find well-priced mokorotlo hats, blankets, woven grass mats, beadwork and pottery — most of it made by women's cooperatives across the highlands.

This is the best place to buy a Seanamarena or Basotho blanket, the heavy patterned wool blanket worn over the shoulders in the cold months and a serious souvenir to take home. Pay the marked price — quality and provenance are guaranteed.

A story
The mokorotlo, the conical straw hat that the building is shaped like, is the national symbol of Lesotho — it appears on the flag, the coat of arms, and on Basotho number plates. Locally it is said the hat's design is borrowed from the shape of Mount Qiloane, the same hill that gave its silhouette to the kingdom.
