Maseru is a good base for short trips into the highlands and along the Caledon River. Thaba Bosiu, the mountain fortress of King Moshoeshoe I, is the essential single trip — 25 km east, easily managed in half a day with a guide.
Roma, the university town 35 km south-east, has a striking sandstone Catholic seminary and a colonial-era hospital. Morija, 40 km south, holds the country's best museum and the country's main arts festival each September. For something more demanding, the southern road into the Senqu (Orange) River valley reaches the Maletsunyane Falls at Semonkong in about three hours.
