Kingsway

Kingsway is the long arterial road that runs through the centre of Maseru — banks, shop fronts, the central post office, a few colonial-era stone buildings, all set against a backdrop of sandstone hills. Walking the length of it is the quickest way to get a sense of the working city.

The eastern end leads up toward the cathedral and the parliament hill; the western end carries on toward the Maseru Bridge border post into South Africa. Pavements are uneven and traffic is busy, but the street feels safe in daylight.

A story
Kingsway was hurriedly paved in 1947 for the visit of King George VI, the only major road in the country to receive that treatment at the time. The story goes that the local British administration discovered the visit was happening only at short notice and had the work completed in a few weeks; the rest of Lesotho's roads remained mud and gravel for another generation.
