Getting There

Awjila lies about 260 km south of Agedabia, and Agedabia is the only practical jumping-off point. There is no airport and no scheduled bus to speak of. Shared minibuses leave Agedabia for the oasis when full, which usually means once or twice a day; the journey takes around three to four hours across mostly empty desert. The road is paved but lonely and there is no fuel between Agedabia and Awjila — top up before you leave.

Most visitors come with their own four-wheel-drive, often as part of a wider Cyrenaica or Saharan trip that also takes in Jalo and continues south to Kufra. For independent travel you will need to check the latest security situation: parts of the Libyan interior have been off-limits to foreign visitors at various times since 2011.
