El Merj, then widely known to Allied forces as Barce, was one of the targets of Operation Caravan in September 1942. Long Range Desert Group raiders attacked Axis lines of communication here during the wider North African campaign.
There is no formal battlefield circuit, but the episode adds another layer to the town's history. It helps explain why this inland road centre appears in Second World War accounts of Cyrenaica.
