Mitiga International Airport serves Tripoli from the east side of the city. It is a former military air base and the only functioning commercial airport for the capital — Tripoli's original international airport, south of the city, has been repeatedly damaged by conflict and has not operated commercially in years. Several Middle Eastern and North African carriers fly to Mitiga, including Turkish Airlines (via Istanbul), Tunisair (from Tunis), and Jordanian and Egyptian carriers. Flights from Europe are limited.
All foreign visitors require a visa, which must currently be obtained in advance through a Libyan embassy. Independent travel is not possible — Libya requires all foreign tourists to be accompanied by a licensed Libyan guide and, in most cases, a police escort. Arrange this through a reputable tour operator before travelling.
The land border with Tunisia at Ras Jdir is the most commonly used overland crossing from the west. The crossing is open but conditions vary. The Egyptian border at Musaid in the east is also functional. Do not attempt overland travel without a guide and up-to-date security advice.
