The two principal reasons most people travel to Libya are both within day-trip range of Tripoli. Sabratha is 65km west — a Roman theatre in near-perfect condition standing right at the sea. Leptis Magna is 130km east and on a different scale entirely: arguably the best-preserved Roman city outside Italy, with a forum, a basilica, a circus, and baths spread across a vast site. Both require a licensed guide and advance planning given the security situation, but both are extraordinary.
