Ambohimanga — 'the beautiful blue hill' — sits 21 kilometres north of Antananarivo and was the original capital of the Merina kingdom before the court moved to Tana. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, it encompasses the royal city, royal tombs, and sacred enclosures set on a hilltop ringed by a massive stone wall with seven original wooden gates. The main gate, a single enormous stone disk, was rolled across the entrance each night by a team of men.
The site remains an active place of pilgrimage. Malagasy visitors come to pray and leave offerings at the royal tombs; the atmosphere is genuinely spiritual rather than purely touristic. Inside the enclosure, the summer palace of King Andrianampoinimerina is preserved with its original furnishings — sleeping platforms, cattle horns, and the fire that was supposedly never extinguished during his reign. Guides are mandatory and add considerable depth to the visit. Allow a half day from Tana, including the drive through rice paddies and market villages.
