Getting There

Most visitors arrive at Ivato International Airport, 15 km north of the city centre. Air Madagascar, Air France, Corsair, Turkish Airlines, and regional carriers serve Antananarivo, with connections via Paris, Nairobi, Johannesburg, Dubai, and other regional hubs. A visa is required for most nationalities; it can be obtained on arrival at the airport for a fee, or in advance from a Malagasy embassy.

Taxis from the airport to the city centre are metered or negotiated; agree a price before getting in. The journey takes 30–60 minutes depending on traffic, which can be severe during morning and evening rush hours. There are shared taxi-brousse (bush taxi) options for the budget-conscious but these are confusing for first-time arrivals. Most hotels offer airport transfers for a fixed fee.

Tana is connected to other Malagasy cities by domestic flights (reliable but pricey) and by the taxi-brousse network. The train service south from the Soarano station runs infrequently and slowly, but the journey through highland scenery is attractive in its own right.
