Shopping

The Analakely Market is the main shopping destination for both locals and visitors — a dense sprawl of covered stalls selling produce, textiles, household goods, and crafts. Tuesday and Friday are the biggest days. For more curated shopping, the Marché Artisanal de la Digue in Ivandry sells quality Malagasy crafts: embroidered tablecloths, zebu leather goods, raffia baskets, and semi-precious stones from the island's remarkable mineral reserves.

Vanilla is the standout purchase: Madagascar produces more than 80 percent of the world's natural vanilla, and buying it here directly from traders — long, plump pods sold in bundles — is far better value than anything available abroad. Emeralds, garnets, and other gemstones are also widely available, but buying from reputable fixed-price shops rather than street vendors is strongly advisable.
