The Avenue de l'Indépendance is the main boulevard of Antananarivo, running from the railway station at the lower end up to the central market area at the top. Lined with colonial-era arcaded buildings, it serves as the commercial and social spine of the city. The avenue is always busy — vendors, commuters, schoolchildren, money changers — and walking its full length gives a rapid introduction to Tana's street life.
Several of the city's landmark institutions sit on or just off the avenue: the Soarano railway station at the bottom, the main post office, banks, and pharmacies along the middle stretch, and the Analakely market area at the top. The arcades provide shade and shelter, making it walkable even in the midday heat. The contrast between the French colonial architecture above and the chaotic street economy at ground level is a defining image of the city.
