The old railway station at Soarano, built by the French in the early twentieth century, is one of Antananarivo's most handsome colonial buildings — a broad arcaded facade in cream and terracotta that has survived remarkably intact. The cafe operating inside the station building has turned the waiting rooms and platform into an atmospheric cultural venue, with live music on weekends and a programme of events that draws a mixed local and expatriate crowd.
During the day it functions as a straightforward coffee stop: good espresso, fresh pastries, and the pleasure of sitting inside a genuinely historic space that most visitors walk past without entering. In the evenings it becomes livelier, particularly when local bands play. The train services themselves are limited and irregular, but the station building alone justifies the short walk from the centre of town.
