Getting Around

The island is about 25 km north to south and a hired taxi or motorbike will get you between the main villages in under an hour. Shared taxis-brousses run the loop between Hell-Ville, Madirokely, Dzamandzar and Andilana for a few thousand ariary.

For the islands offshore, you negotiate a pirogue or speedboat from any beach or from the port at Hell-Ville. Standard day-trip prices are well understood by local boatmen; ask for the rate at your hotel before haggling.

A self-drive scooter or quad bike is the most enjoyable way to see the interior — the back roads through ylang-ylang plantations and Sakalava villages are part of the island's charm.
