Ranomafana National Park

Ranomafana National Park is one of Madagascar's essential rainforest stops. Trails climb through humid forest where guides look for bamboo lemurs, red-bellied lemurs, sifakas, chameleons, frogs, orchids, and birds that you would walk past unaided.

This is not a casual city park. Paths can be steep and muddy, rain comes quickly, and wildlife sightings depend on patience. Hire a good guide, start early, and consider a night walk outside the park boundary if you want to see smaller nocturnal species.

A story
The park's creation is tied to the discovery of the golden bamboo lemur in the 1980s. That small, specialised animal helped turn a threatened forest into one of Madagascar's flagship protected areas.
