Vwaza is one of the best bird-watching destinations in Malawi, with over 300 species recorded across its mix of wetland, dambo, and woodland habitats. The marshes themselves are the centre of activity: African fish eagles, saddle-billed storks, white-faced whistling ducks, and several heron and egret species are all easy to find around Lake Kazuni.
The woodland holds rarer specialities — the racket-tailed roller, the African broadbill, several cuckoos and hornbills. The dry-season concentrations around the lake make even casual birding rewarding; a serious birder with a few days here should expect 150 species without trying. Take a scout familiar with the bird life if possible; the resident staff at Kazuni Camp know the species well.
