Walking Safari

The reserve scouts at Kazuni Camp offer walking safaris of two to four hours from the main gate — substantially better value and far more involving than the equivalent vehicle drive. An armed scout (always armed; this is elephant and buffalo country) leads small groups along the lakeshore and into the surrounding woodland.

Walks are best in the early morning or late afternoon when the animals are active and the heat is bearable. You should expect to see hippos, elephants, antelope, and a great number of birds; lion and leopard tracks are common but encounters are rare. Wear long trousers and decent boots — the bush has thorns and the grass has ticks.

A story
Vwaza is one of the few places in southern Africa where you can walk among elephants for a modest fee paid directly to the local community trust. The scouts know the elephants individually and can read their mood from a hundred metres away.
