Bamako is the launch pad for Mali's most impressive destinations. Djenne and Mopti are reachable in a day's drive. Dogon Country requires a few days to do properly — most people base themselves in Bankass or Bandiagara. Timbuktu is further still and now largely off-limits due to security conditions in the north; check current advice before making plans.
