Niger River Pirogue Crossing

The Niger River at Gao is wide, slow, and deeply atmospheric in the early morning. A pirogue ride across to the far bank — where a red sand dune rises directly from the water's edge — is one of the most memorable experiences in town. The crossing takes about 20 minutes each way and can be arranged through the boatmen at the river landing.

The dune on the opposite bank is part of the Sahara proper, and the contrast between the green-brown Niger water and the orange-red sand is striking. Going at sunrise, when the light is soft and fishermen are casting their nets, makes this one of the few genuinely beautiful moments Gao offers. Bring water and expect to negotiate a price with the boatmen.
