Gao is not a tourist city, but it has several genuinely remarkable sights. The Tomb of Askia dominates — one of the finest examples of Sudano-Sahelian architecture in Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The rest of the city rewards patience: the market, the river, and the red sand dune across the Niger are all worth experiencing.
