Kita Train Station

Kita is a station on the old Dakar-Niger Railway, the colonial line completed in 1924 that connected the Atlantic at Dakar with the Niger River at Koulikoro. The station building, with its long platform and shaded verandas, is a piece of French West African railway architecture little changed in a century.

Service has been intermittent for years — full passenger service between Bamako and Dakar was suspended long ago, and what runs now is unpredictable. Even when nothing is moving, the station is worth a visit for the atmosphere: peanut sellers in the shade, old men playing draughts, the long red-earth platform stretching toward Bamako and Kayes.
