Rene Caillie, a French explorer, reached Timbuktu in 1828 disguised as an Arab pilgrim. He was the first European to make it here and survive the return journey. The house itself is modest -- the main attraction is a commemorative plaque on the wall and the satisfaction of standing where one of Africa's great exploration stories played out.
